Here are some examples of design codes currently either in use or being consulted on in England. Some were funded by DLUHC and the Office for Place under their Pathfinder programme. See the lesssons learnt from Pathfinders from the Design Council, now updated to include lessons from Phases 2 and 3.
To see how those who have worked on codes so far feel about them, take a look at our survey.
Some of the codes cover the whole of a local authority’s area, some focus on a specific place such as a town centre or suburb and some cover just one site. Some codes focus on a single design issue such as street design while others cover lots of issues. You can use our dropdown menus to find the type of codes you are most interested in and click on the image for information about that code.
Please also visit the Office for Place website for more information on design codes
UDL does not endorse or pass comment on the quality of any of these examples – we are providing them for illustration purposes only. Please note that while we have listed these by local authority area for ease of reference, sites codes are often written by developers and the local authority's sole role will be to grant planning permission.
